Anna Karenina is the masterpiece of Leo Tolstoy.He wrote it after his great work War and Peace.The novel is a criticism on sex and marriage.The double standards meted out in the society forms the main theme of the novel.Anna Karenina is the heroine of the novel.She is the wife of Alexie Karenin.They have a son named Sheroyzha.Anna is a beautiful lady with a charming face.She is full of fun and is a person who likes fun and frolic in her life.But her husband Karenin is a cold official is only interested in keeping up his reputation.It is at this time that Anna happens to be at St.Petersburg to clear the marrital life of her brother and wife.During this time she happens to meet Vronsky, a young handsome man from a ball.Here turns the life of Anna and she falls straight into the hearts of Vronsky.Thus an affair is initiated between Anna and Vronsky.Finally she conceives Vronsky's child.But Tolstoy's heroine Anna is bold enough to confess this fact to her husband Karenin.But Karenin is only concerned about his official reputation.He tells Anna to keep it as a secret instead of beating her or scolding her.But eventually the love between Anna and Vronsky too fades and finally Anna throws herself in front of the train and thus puts an end to her own life.

The novel was a new classic work on the criticism of society.The adultery of a young lady forms the major theme of the novel.The predicament of a deserted woman form the main theme .Love and crulty, isolation and social involvemnt, innocence and experience, solitude and society etc are the various polarities presented in the novel.Freedom on the social level, love and hatred on the ethic level, comic and satire on tone level and horror and peace on moral level are the main themes in the novel.
