Sense And Sensibility
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Jane Austen was one of the foremost writers of her time. The fact she was female only heightens the importance of that statement. She took the harsh realities life handed her and used them to produce best sellers to endure all times.

Austen?s ?Sense and Sensibility? takes a look at the dire straights one family of females were left in upon the passing of the father. The story opens with the passing of the Dashwood patriarch, introducing the strife of the story.

The Dashwood women were thrown to the mercy of the half son/ half brother. There were four Dashwood women: Mrs. Dashwood, Ms. Dashwood (Elinor), Miss Marianne, and Margaret.

In their family home passing on to the Dashwood son from a previous marriage, we are introduced to the Ferrars family. Edward Ferrars stops at the estate of Norland on the way to the city to see his pretentious mother. Edward and Elinor form a bond while he stays at Norland. The interference of Edward?s sister, the new mistress of the manor, splits the pair and pushes Mrs. Dashwood to accept residence elsewhere.

All of the ladies Dashwood form an attachment to young Edward before finding a new home to occupy. The new home introduces them to a whole new audience of peers and back into social circles they had previously had to abandon due to circumstance.

The book reveals the journey from riches to near poverty as well as the travels of the heart. The new home introduces the suitors of Marianne in the form of Colonel Brandon and Thomas Willoughby. The Colonel represents the dedicated unwavering love we all seek, while Willoughby was the brash, money hungry Casanova.

Elinor is introduced to the secret engagement between Edward Ferrars and a Miss Lucy Steele thus breaking her heart. Elinor lives with the knowledge not letting her family know the whole situation. While in the city, Edward?s mother hears of his engagement to Miss Steele and disowns him; thereby ending any inheritance he might have been eligible.

Marianne is pushed to the brink of death by her own folly. She suffered humiliation at the hands of Willoughby who had turned his affections from her to someone with money. It is Colonel Brandon that comes to her aid. He helps Elinor and Marianne by accompanying them home.

Once home again at the cottage on Barton Park, the ladies are made aware of Lucy Steele having married Mr. Ferrars. This is breaks Elinor?s heart. Marianne turns her attentions towards the patient Colonel Brandon. Her illness and his unyielding love for her made her realize the great man he was. Her sensibilities shifted, opening the door to happily ever after.

The ladies receive an unexpected visitor in the form of Edward Ferrars. As the women congratulate him on his marriage, the truth is revealed. While in the city, Lucy Steele formed an attachment to his brother. They had married. Edward, still cast out of his family, was overseeing a parish on the estate of Colonel Brandon. He completes two lives by asking Elinor to marry him. Penniless or not, love outweighed the world.
