Hard Times
(Charles Dickens)

Publicidade
Charles Dickens has been a great favourite throughout the ages especially with all races, classes and creeds. There is something about a good story that commands respect. The wonderful portrayal of Dickensian life always keeps me on the edge of my seat! I love to see the children clapping and enjoying the story ... there is a touch of sadness about it but then when good triumphs over evil and the story really gets going then we all have our favourite book.

Hard Times, is quite a serious novel, Dickens moves into tragic areas of life ... I suppose we have Disney Movies in Hollywood Ca USA to thank for the dressing up of misery and hardship/ but in this book:
Dickens deals with the tragic story of human oppression. Sounds like a ROCK STAR poem but it isnt/fighting oppression has been around as long as Charles Dickens Books.

Coketown is a red brick industrial city in the North of England which enslaves its inhabitants both child and adult alike --- it sets about to break the spirit of its citizens. Harshness is a way of life,
and Josiah Bounderby, is a wonderful Dickensian creation, as it evokes imagery and great characteristics for which Dickens is so famous, is a pompous self man made: Gradgrind is a censorious disciplinarian and is another major character in this book.

Even though it deals with misery and social exploitation in England of that period, there is a contrasted notion created through wit, and humour! Again evident in a lot of Dickens other great books. Everyone must enjoy a book and I hope you find this one interesting if not enjoyable ... great stuff!
