The Pandavas and the Kauravas spent their childhood
amidst

fun and frolic in Hastinapura. Bhima, one of Pandu?s
sons,

was the strongest of the lot. He often used to tease
and

bully Duryodhana and the other Kauravas. Their bodies
would

perennially nurse some injury or the other inflicted by

Bhima. From their childhood, therefore, the Kauravas
had

developed a strong dislike for Bhima.

Sage Kripacharya trained all the children in the
various

martial arts. Duryodhana?s hatred for Bhima made his
mind

perverse. He resented the fact that Yudhishthira, the

eldest Pandava, was the heir apparent. He started
thinking

up hideous means of ascending the throne of
Hastinapura.

For this, he thought that he must get rid of his
archrival

Bhima.

Duryodhana and his brothers schemed to drown Bhima in
the

Ganges, where the brothers had gone for a swim. First,
they

poisoned him to unconsciousness, and later bound his
body

with creepers and dumped him in the river. Bhima was
bitten

by snakes that infested those parts of the Ganges. The

venom of the snakes neutralised the poison in Bhima?s
body

and before long the body was washed ashore.

Duryodhana and party, content in their belief that
Bhima

had died, returned home merrily. But Yudhishthira was

worried about their brother?s absence. The Pandavas

searched the forests, but in vain. In time, Bhima woke
up

and strolled back home. Kunti and the Pandavas welcomed
him

with joy. The interaction of poisons had made Bhima
even

stronger.

Kunti, convinced of Duryodhana?s evil designs, confided
in

Vidura her apprehensions. Vidura acknowledged that her

worries were justified but consoled her that her sons
were

destined to live long. Yudhishthira advised Bhima to
remain

careful. But Duryodhana was deeply disappointed. His
hatred

and jealousy spiralled.
