Berlin 1945: The Fall
(Beevor, Antony)

Publicidade
Berlin 1945: The Fall has seduced many readers and critics by describing the devastation caused by the German invasion of the Soviet Union in Stalingrad. Anthony Beevor reveals how the revenge happened, two years later with the seizing of the Third Reich?s capital that put an end to the Second World War It was a bestseller on England?s selling list. The book presents a reconstruction of the military strategies, of the reality endured by the soldiers and of the massacre of the civilian population. During a questioning in the post-war period, Albert Speer said that «History always emphasizes terminal events». Speer could not bear the thought of Hitler´s first achievements being brought to oblivion by the final collapse. But he, as other prominent Nazis, refused to recognise what was revealed after the regime?s fall. On February 1st, 1943 a soviet colonel captured a group of german prisoners in the Stalingrad?s rubble. «This is what Berlin will look like!» he shouted, pointing to the buildings around him. When reading those words Anthony Beevor was certain that he needed to do more research and write that story. And that he did for six years. The advance of the german troops in Russia ant the soviet counter-attack are characterised by a great destruction of cities, prisoner massacres and despair of the civil society. The book is indeed detailed and takes the reader into the story with excellent narratives like for instance heads of state devising their strategies, a general commanding his army or german women raped by soviets. Berlin 1945: The Fall, a clever reading suggestion.
