The capital was considered by Marx himself his major theoretical work. It is not a coincidence that he actually he never stopped working on this book. What we have here, is a fine grained analysis of the Marxian(refer to Marx to distinguish from Marxists) view of the political form known as capitalism. Marx presents the roots of such a system providing it's origin as the accumulation of the surplus value. General rules of the behaviour of capitalism are introduced, and even if the most of them seem to be a little bit outdated today, they are still strikingly lucid examples of political thought. In other words, a classic and probably the most influential critique of capitalist economy
