Murder On The Orient Express
(Agatha Christie)

Publicidade
This is undoubtedly one of Agatha Christie's best known novels. It concerns a group of people travelling on the Orient Express but are stranded in snow. Among the passenger's is Hercule Poirot, who then takes control when a particularly brutal murder is committed on the train. This leads Poirot to start investigating the murder and finally solving the crime.

But, unfortunately, I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed by it. Sure the story is good by all means and well known, but what bothered me most was that the main part of the story concerns in interviewing the passengers, causing some lack of interest, at least in my part.

Of course there is little one can do on a stranded train where you can't get off from, but still I would have wanted a little flair to the book. And there was one thing that I was also missing: the quaint little French phrases appearing in every other book were completely absent (at least in the version that I read).

The ending of course would have been quite unexpected, had I not seen the movie Murder on the Orient Express before I read it. And when I compare this novel with some other Christie novels like Cards on the Table or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, personally I don't consider this to be quite that good as some other Christie mystery.

But still, if you want to read Agatha Christie's most famous novels, this is a must read, and then you can make your own mind of it's value.

Interestingly enough, the story is based partly on the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby in 1932 in America, when a hefty ransom was paid for the safe return of the kidnapped child who was killed by the kidnappers even after receiving the ransom. As with most Christie books the characters are developed to an extent that you can empathise with them, even though on first inspection many of them can seem cold, calculating or downright arrogant. When the plot unfolds, all is understood and it's all perfectly wrapped up, there were no loose ends to my mind.
