Lost In The Forest
(Sue Miller)

Publicidade
The book jacket review of Sue Miller's "Lost in The Forest" would lead you to believe that the novel is not unlike Miller's other works . " Fans won't be disappointed.." it promises. However, if you were looking for that shocking punch Miller always hits you with halfway through the novel, you might be let down.

If you've read, "While I was Gone" or "The Good Mother" you remember the breathlessness you felt at the sudden turn of events. I actually remember gasping and saying, "Oh, My God!" when suddenly there was a murder in the peaceful hippie commune setting as I read that beautifully written novel among novels. My heart just sank into a million pieces when the young mother in "The Good Mother" suddenly found herself in a custody battle. But although I found what happened to Daisy in "Lost in The Forest" alarming and uncomfortable, it emerged in a very calm way, not delivered with the usual punch. It was almost more shocking in the beginning , in the brutal way John dies, before you actually learn to care about this family.

Please don't take this as a criticism of Sue Miller's writing. Quite the contrary. It is quite good. I enjoyed every word of it. Her tale is woven into a stunning tapestry, rich in detail of The Napa Valley, rich in the heartfelt adjustment to life without John. Marriage, kids, life, sex. She makes the ordinary come alive and something to be thankful for.

As a reader, I had wished something more had happened to Duncan. His abuse of Daisy gets you steamed up, and you hope Mark confronts him, discovers Daisy and Duncan and punches him out, or something. It doesn't
seem right that Duncan gets away with what he's done. But such is fiction.
