Alexandra Lapierre tells us about the life of Fanny Stevenson. This
exceptionnal woman is famous because she lived with Robert Louis
Stevenson, the author of so many books : "The Strange case of Doctor
Jekyll and Mister Hyde", "Treasure Island" etc. She meets him in 1876.
He is a young man of 23, and she is a 35-year-old mother, separated
from her husband. Her life until then deserves already a novel. She
grew up in Indianapolis and married for love at 17 years old a young
adventurer who, on coming back from the Civil War, decided to go into
the West to look for gold. She follows him with their little daughter
Belle. After having lived for a few years a pioneer life, they settle
in San Francisco. From that moment, their life as a couple started
getting worse. Fanny finds herself with a husband only at week ends
while he is busy the rest of the week with his mistresses. She is then
a mother of three and decides to spend a year or two in Europe where
she wants to sharpen her painting skills. She takes a boat to Holland,
then to Paris where she shares her time between her family and her
painting. But life is hard and the money given by her husband is
missing. Her youngest son falls ill and dies. It will take her months
to recover and settles in an inn next to the Loing where she meets a
happy group of artists, among whom the young Robert Louis Stevenson who
is not a famous writer yet. Their love is born there and will last
twenty years, until the death of the writer. They and Fanny's children
will live a life rich of adventures that have inspired the writer all
his life. These adventures are decribed in the book by Alexandra
Lapierre. At the end of the reading, the reader is shared between
admiration for this small woman so modern who succeeded is living her
life fully and the will to read again the novels of her famous husband.
