What an amazing book, fabulous story-telling. Must be read at least twice.
The time traveler''s wife is first of all a love story. The story of Henry, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder and of Clare who has known Henry for most of her life.
Henry has a rare mutation that causes him to time travel unwillingly. It''s kind of a defense mechanism causing him to disappear when things get bad. This condition has saved his life as a child but has caused him a lot of discomfort and pain ever since.
Henry and Clare first met when Henry was thirty-six and Clare was six. Henry time traveled to meet Clare several times since that time and followed her throughout her growing up and becoming a mature woman. Henry and Clare fall head over heels in love with each other and try to lead a normal life together. However, Henry''s condition messes up even the most special and intimate moments. Henry and Clare try to start a family, but Clare keeps aborting. The fetuses simply time-travel out of her womb until somehow nature finds a way for them to have a very special baby.
Henry goes to see a geneticist, who manages to clone the time-traveling gene and engineer time-traveling mutant mice. The doctor thinks he might be able to cure the mice using gene therapy but this is too late for Henry. In a horrible, un-avoidable way, Henry finds his destiny not before leaving Clare with a final hope that one day they will meet again.
