The story tell of two sisters: Elinor, who has sense; and Marianne, who has sensibility. Their unfortunate love affairs form the basis of the narrative. Edward Ferrars, with whom Elinor is in love, is entangled with a sly, avaricious girl, Lucy Steeple. His mother, upon learning this, disinherits him. Lucy, being without scruple, then jilts him for his younger brother, now the heir. So Edward returns to Elinor, who takes him back. Marianne''s lover, the handsome and dashing John Willoughby, is a heartless rascal. He leaves her and goes to London. Romantic by nature, she follows him to the city, but his insolent conduct soon disillusions her. She then sacrifices her childish and absurd romanticism for the joys of a sensible marriage with the staid, middle aged Colonel Brandon.
