Global Warming
(Ron Fridell)

Publicidade
Discussions have been held & books/articles written, on this topic of importance for the entire world. On the face of it, this topic looks to be innocuous, but it is fraught with danger. It has been observed from the recorded data that, on an average there is an increase of 0.5 degree centigrade in the global temperatures in the last 200 years. Half of this rise in temperature, has come in the last 37 years. This trend is expected to continue, with the expectation that the 2100 AD will be warmer than at present. Experts of various fields like wild life biologists, economists, chemists, engineers, climate scientists & computer specialists etc., are all working in this field to find out the future conditions of the world. It is not yet known exactly as to why it is getting warmer, & also as to how much warmer it will become. There is also a lot of disagreement, as to what & how much good or bad will happen, as a result of it, & who or what is responsible for it. Some people lay the blame on the actions of the human beings, whole some others say that it is just natural. The controversy on the effect of this global warming on the life on earth continues, while the research work is going on. It is apprehended that the warming of the atmosphere & the oceans, may lead to melting of polar ice, increase of water level in seas & flooding. In eight Chapters of this book, the author discusses its various aspects viz. likely causes, signs of changes, forecasting of the extent & impact of the changes etc.
In one of its important Chapters, the author discusses about various actions, that are being taken or can be taken, to face this problem, even though the available information about the causes is inadequate. Some persons say that it is not likely to be a serious problem, & it may even be a good thing. Some others say that this problem is a creation of the media, who have projected it as a danger to the living beings. But there are many, who are talking about the dangers & costs of its consequences. We have also to work out the costs of the proposed actions. Business leaders want the proposed actions like regulations etc. e.g. Kyoto treaty, to be taken up, on a long term basis, wherein all nations including developing nations, should be included. There are several environmental groups, who carry out campaigns, & who want the levels of carbon di-oxide emissions reduced quickly. Several strategies have been designed for reducing the green house gas emissions, e.g. conserving energy by using less energy; using natural gas since it is cleaner burning; using nuclear power being a cleaner source; maintaining equilibrium by planting more trees & not cutting forests, so that they absorb carbon di-oxide; recycling the waste, instead of using it for land filling; using fuel cells, solar power & wind power like renewable forms of energy; using geo-engineering techniques to compress carbon di-oxide & storing it deep underground, or at the bottom of the sea; locating vast mirrors in orbiting stations in space & by changing their angles, controlling the amount of sunlight reaching the earth etc. The climate of our earth remains a mystery, & the fears & concerns like floods occurring, & lands turning to deserts remain. We are not yet sure of what is going to happen in future, but yet we have to take preparatory actions, wherever possible on the basis of the likely causes, & keep ourselves prepared to save our earth & ourselves, from this kind of disaster.
