Eragon
(Christopher Paolini)

Publicidade
Eragon, by Christopher Paolini is a story of a young fifteen-year-old boy who lives in a time and a land filled with the legends of dragons and their riders. Unfortunately, they were all killed long ago by the evil king Galbatorix. Now, to many, the legend is regarded as a simple folk tale. Uncle Garrow, his son Roran, and Eragon live in a poor little hovel ten miles outside of the small town of Carvahall. It is dirty and old; the people are poor and not too friendly. The locals like Carvahall because it is away from any main thoroughfare, and out of the king?s view. One wintry day after a failed hunting trip to the Spine, a mountain range steeped in mystery and superstition, Eragon?s life is irreversibly altered when he discovers a large, bluish stone. It?s unlike any he?s ever seen, and Eragon, sure that it will save his family from impending starvation, brings it home. Several days later, Eragon is startled awake in the middle of the night by a noise coming from the unusual gem. He watches dumbfounded as it cracks, and finally a baby dragon appears. Eragon knows his uncle would never allow him to keep her, so he hides the baby dragon and cares for her in secret. Garrow is killed, and the farm is ruined by the king?s henchmen, the Ra?zac. Eragon then leaves town on a mission of revenge with his young dragon, Saphira, and the story teller, Brom. Their lives are filled with peril as they race against time to annihilate the Ra?zac, and resist the king before being discovered and destroyed themselves. The young dragon rider grows in wisdom and stature as he, Saphira and Brom follow the trail of the Ra?zac. Unbeknownst to Eragon, Brom is a legendary dragon rider who escaped death by living under the guise of a story teller. Brom teaches his new protégé the ways of a Rider and Eragon learns to defend himself with a sword, and magic. He battles the Urgal, the king?s army, and he rescues the beautiful elf woman, Arya. Eventually, Eragon realizes that he must make a choice either to serve Galbatorix, or the king?s enemies, the Varden. It is then that he begins the death-defying trek in search of their secret bastion. He arrives, hoping for a safe haven, but finds that, all too soon, he is embroiled in another battle with the king?s associates. Will Eragon ever be able to overthrow Galbatorix?s evil rule? Will he know peace and love as a Rider? These are questions that are not answered in this first book, but Eragon does aid in his first triumph on behalf of the Varden.
