Fantastic imagination, wonderful description, totally mind-spinning as you find yourself in the epoch of 18th century Franceaware of all your senses...smell being the most potent. Something that you take so much for granted and don't appreciate at all. For my part, it has really brought the art of smelling to the forefront of my mind and ever since the first page of the book, I have been so much more aware of what is around me. The sense of smellitself is something that I would never have thought could be the centre of such a great story.
Patrick Suskind writes beautifully as if he actually lived in that period of Paris society along with the "common people". He tells the story of a boy born into terrible poverty without the love of a family and no friends whatsoever. He grows up being put in various homes and working in a tannery at the age of 13. There he discovers his fascination for smells of all kinds, from the most disgusting to the most beautiful he has ever had chance to notice. He gradually turns this passion into an art-form and finds himself as apprentice to a once well-respected Paris perfumer.
As the years pass, he realises that he must take on the charge of creating the most beautiful perfume the world has ever had the opportunity to try. The only way to follow through with his ambition is to murder - a means to an end as he hates the whole of the human race, he is completely at ease with this thought. Having discovered that he actually has no scent himself, he uses this to his advantage and the scents of beautiful virgins are his target. One in particular brings his destiny to a head.
A fascinating plot and a very unexpected ending will have you hanging on to every word and you'll never use your nose the same way again.
