WUTHERING HEIGHTS tells of therelationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, the orphan who herfather adopted and brought to Wuthering Heights when they were children. WhileCatherine shows a deep attachment to Heathcliff her Brother Hindley despiseshim and treats as a rival. Heathcliff becomes torn between love for Catherineand pain and humiliation he suffers. Finally he can not stand it any longer andon one stormy night he leaves the Heights for three years. During his absenceCatherine got married, but her heart stillbelongs to Heathcliff, who isnow prepared to get his revenge. He comes back as a rich man, becomes the owner of Wuthering Heights and he paysregular visits in Mr. Catherine and Edgar Linton's home, where he meets Mr.Linton's 18-year-old sister Isabella, who falls in love with Heathcliff. Theysoon get married and move back to Wuthering Heights. Isabella soon discovershow tyrannical, brutal and violent a man her husband is, and one evening sheruns away and leaves the Heights for ever.In the meantime, Catherine, having given birth to a little daughter, dies aftera long-lasting illness, she's been suffering from. When Cathy is 13, heraunt Isabella dies orphaning her 13-years-old son Linton. Cathy meets him atthe Heights where he lives with his father Heathcliff. Cathy and Linton becomefriends and see each other quite often. Being aware of Heathcliff's dislike toher father, Cathy keeps seeing Linton, whom she likes more every time, evenwhen her father gets ill. Once, while paying a visit in Wuthering Heights Cathyis being prisoned by Heathcliff and made to marry Linton the very same day. When all the pleads, cry and attempts of escaping fails she agrees wanting tosee her father once more before he dies. When she manages to tell her fatherher last ?good-bye? he is convinced of her happiness. After the funeral,Heathcliff takes Cathy back to the Heights where she lives with her husbandLinton.Since now Cathy has been made to live under thesame roof with her father?s worst enemy, a man who took over her land, home andmoney and administer those as her guardian.Heathcliff is a very controversial character ?totally unpredictable ? man who lives hating and destroying others but diescherishing the only woman he ever loved. Heathcliff has a great influence onthose he hates as well as on those he loves. This character put the plottogether. And the plot spans about twenty years and despite that it is veryinteresting, strict and keep you tense.Reading ?Wuthering Heights? you may cry and laugh, you may feel compassion and anger, you may be touched and furious, but you willnever be disappointed. And that is why I recommend it as worth reading.self-studyMagda K.
