The supporters of the novel point out its particular atmosphere, great picture of everyday life of the high class of nineteenth century, author's ability of constructing the plot as well as taking up the important moral problem - should we seek revenge or rather forgive? The plot begins in 1815. The main character, poor sailor named Edmond Dantes is going to become the captain of the ship "Pharaon" and marry his beloved, Mercedes. But three envious men - Danglars, who also aspires to become the captain, his neighbour Caderousse and Fernand, who is in love with Mercedes, write an anynomous letter accusing Edmond of supporting the recently overthrown Napoleon Bonaparte. In order to become more succesful in his job, the prosecutor named de Villefort sends Edmond without a trial to life imprisonment in the castle If. Edmond is close to commiting a suicide, which he finally rejects because of his friendship with another prisoner, a priest named Faria. This well-educated man shares his incredible knowledge with Edmond and tells him a story of a treasure hidden on Monte Cristo island. The priest also guesses who caused Edmond's imprisonment and this way provokes in him the will of revenge. They plan to escape together, but Faria became paralyzed and then died. Dantes, despaired, decidesto hide in his friend's coffin and leave prison this way. The riskful plan works. Edmond joinsthe smuglers, comes to Monte Cristo and finally finds the treasure. Suddenly he becomes a millionaire. He disguises himself as a priest, finds Caderousse and forces him to confess him how was the anonymous accusation written and what happened next to its authors. Edmond finds out that Fernand was granted an aristocratic title as a reward for his bravery during wars. Then he married Mercedes, who waited for Edmond for one year and a half and finally believed that he had been long dead. Danglars owned a bank and had regular income thanks to the stock market. Finally, Villefort become the chief royal prosecutor. Dantes spends next few year in the East, looking for more information and witness who might be useful in his future revenge and then goes back to Paris using the name the count of Monte Cristo. During the next ten months the capital city of France is shaken by three great failures: Fernand de Morcerf commits suicide, because everyone got to know that he had bertrayed pasha Ali Tebelin during one of the past wars and this way got rich. Baron Danglars bancruits, gets caught by the Roman bandits and loses everything. Villefort gets insane when the public opinion is informed about his love affairs, his illegitimate son turns out to be a murderer and his wife poisons all the family and then - as a response to his anger - kills both herself and her son, the beloved prosecutor's child. No one has a think that it was Monte Cristo who cold-heartedly prepared all these events in order to revenge himself. Finally Edmond leaves Paris and return to the East with Tebelin's daughter and Arabian princess Hayde who he brought up like his own daughter. Another important part of the story is love between Maximilien Morrel and Valentine de Villefort, prosecutor's unwanted daughter. The count of Monte Cristo helps Maximilien, the son of his ancient employer, to save the girl from certain death by her stepmother's hand, then persuades Maximilien not to commit a suicide after Valentine's fake death and gives them most of his wealth after they meet once again in Monte Cristo island caves.
