ABSTRACT ? O?DONNELL, PETER & HOLDAWAY, JIM ? MODESTY BLAISE - THE GALLEY SLAVES ?(in the BAD SUKI collection) 2005 Titan Books. A reproduction of a 1960?s Modesty Blaise comic strip. Modesty and her gambling mad friend, Willie are having a boring time on a cruise in the South Seas with some friends, so they literally jump ship, voluntarily becoming castaways on a desert island. They are confident that they can build a raft and sail to Tahiti when they have had enough of their exotic adventure. Events conspire to change that when they find an ancient looking Roman SLAVE Galley sailing around the island. It turns out to belong to a Hollywood film crew making a Ben Hur type epic. Modesty and Willie are offered a part in the film, and take a few days to sail with the crew. However, this itself is interrupted during a filming break in Tahiti when Modesty is asked by the CIA to investigate the disappearance of some stolen US Submarine surveillance technology. The technology is in the possession of a man called Lim, who Modesty once worked for in her own criminal past. Modesty and Willie go to see Lim, but find out that he is now a ruthless killer rather than a rogue like they still are and as he was in the old days. Lim, unhappy that they won?t help him rip off the CIA, tries to kill them. He then takes the film crew of the Hollywood slave ship hostage and makes them into galley slaves for real to have them sail his stole goods to a rendezvous with the new buyers he has found. Modesty and Willie fail in a rescue bid, and end up as slaves too, but they start a slave?s rebellion, and Modesty uses the oars as cover to shoot the villains from off the side of the ship. With the villains captured and the ship saved, and the apparatus back in the hands of the CIA, Modesty and Willie go back to their island Paradise to swim with the turtles. Preposterous, but fun adventure told at a trilling pace that does not seem remotely dated.
