Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
(Roald Dahl)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl, is a whimsical children's tale about childhood dreams, problems with child raising, and of course, lots of candy. It is a delightful romp through a child's fantasy with morals threading through it as well. Dahl's style is clearly running through the entire book in this fun novel. Charlie is only a poor kid living with his multiple grandparents when the mysterious Wonka Chocolate Factory, out of which no one and nothing ever comes out except candy, puts out a declaration of a contest. Somewhere in all the candy that Wonka puts out all over the world, there are five Golden Tickets which will enable the lucky child who finds one to go on a tour inside the factory itself! People all over the world try to find the tickets and they buy as many candy bars from Wonka as they can, so what chance does poor Charlie have on his birthday, when he only gets one dollar so that he can buy only one candy bar a year...? Willy Wonka's factory is an amazing place straight out of any child's fantasies, from everything like the river of chocolate (and waterfall to mix it) to the blades of sugar grass to the squirrels deciding which nuts are good and which are bad. Wonka invents things such as the Everlasting Gobstopper and ButterAle (to go with ButterScotch and ButterRum, of course) that will delight children and amuse parents. Parents also will enjoy the book for it's many morals, as the flaws of many children suddenly backfire on them in hilarious ways inside of the factory. Roald Dahl is a master story teller and brings Charlie, his grandparents and Willy Wonka himself to life in brilliant bold color in this book. Worth a Golden Ticket itself, the book creates a wondrous world for children to play in. With fantasy, morals and Oompa Loompas galore, this book is one you won't want to miss.
