Sense And Sensibility
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Mr and Mrs Dashwood live with their three daughters on an estate in Sussex. However, unfortunately, the family is left very little when Mr. Dashwood dies, and the estate goes entirely to his son by a previous marriage who refuses to help his half sisters or their mother.

Elinor is the sensible sister of the family, while her sister, Marianne remains romantic and full of ?sensibility.? Elinor finds herself interested in the brother of her snobbish sister-in-law, Fanny. But, Edward, the man?s, family is completely against him associating with someone as poor as her and it seems doom to failure. The Dashwoods soon move from their home to a cottage at Barton Park in Devonshire, thus parting Edward and Elinor.

At Barton Park Marianne meets Colonel Brandon, a respectable man who has a deep regard for her. However, Marianne is not interesting in someone so sensible, and at 35 years old, appears terribly old to the young lady. Soon she finds herself in love with a dashing young man, Mr. Willoughby, who reads poetry, is romantically inclined and seems everything that she could wish for in a man.
During a picnic party, Colonel Brandon finds he has to dash off to London after some dreadful news.

Soon after the Colonel?s departure, Mrs. Dashwood and Elinor feel that Willoughby will propose to Marianne at any moment. Their hopes are dashed, however, after they find Marianne in tears and Willoughby departed for London. Elinor fears that the seemingly nice young man may not actually have had any serious attentions on her sister. Nevertheless, Marianne?s health declines after her heart is broken.

Edward comes to visit them in Barton and Elinor is thrilled by his visit. Unfortunately, the man seems altered and he doesn?t show as much interest in Elinor as he had done before, even though he appears to be wearing a ring with a lock of hair that looks like Elinor?s. He soon departs to go back to Sussex. Elinor is left confused and upset by his behavior.

Soon afterwards Lucy Steele arrives in the village. Though very pretty, she is scheming, manipulative and extremely vain. Unfortunately, Elinor finds herself in the position of confidant and Lucy tells her that she is secretly engaged to Edward. Elinor is shocked and dismayed by this turn of events, but feels that if Edward marries such a horrible woman, he will have punishment enough for deceiving Elinor.

Marianne and Elinor are invited to spend the winter in London with friends. Marianne is determined to go and find out what has happened to Willoughby and so Elinor decides that she better go as well and try to protect her sister.

In London, it soon appears that there are rumors about of an engagement between Marianne and Willoughy, which is certainly not the case. When Marianne finally meets her beau, he avoids her and then insults her. His personality is so altered that she doesn?t know what to think. Marianne soon discovers that Willoughby is to marry the rich Lady Grey for her money.

Colonel Brandon soon arrives and tells Marianne his knowledge of Willoughby?s true character. Apparently a ward of Brandon?s household was trifled with by Willoughby and abandoned to raise an illegitimate child on her own.

Elinor also finds out that Edward is to marry a rich heiress and thus succumb to his family?s wishes. Lucy appears on the scene and Edward is forced to honor his former marriage contract to her, even though he no longer loves her and their secret engagement occurred when they were both very young and foolish.

Elinor and Marianne are both unhappy at this point, but Marianne?s health goes into serious decline and she is dreadfully ill. Colonel Brandon still loves her, but Elinor fears that Marianne may never come to appreciate such a worthy gentleman as the Colonel.

Marianne soon recovers from her illness and tells Elinor she no longer loves Willoughby, for how could she love anyone who behaved so badly to other ladies. Her regard for Colonel Branddon grows and they soon make an alliance.
Elinor has heard rumours that Edward is married to Lucy. She now despairs over ever being united with him. However, Edward suddenly arrives at their doorstep and tells her that it wasn?t he, but his brother who married Lucy. Elinor dissolves into tears and Edward finally sees how she loves him. They soon decide to marry as well, thus finally assuring the happiness of both sisters.
