Alexandre Dumas' classic "The Count of Monte Cristo" tells the story of an innocent man unjustly imprisoned, who concocts a brilliant plan to take revenge on those who betrayed him. The young sailor Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) is a simple, honest man who lives a peaceful life. Amond his plans is marriage to the beautiful Mercedes (Dagmara Dominczyk). But everything suddenly falls apart when his best friend Fernando (Guy Pearce), who has designs on Mercedes, betrays him. Condemned to live out an unjust sentence in the sinister prison on the Isle of Chateau D'If, Edmond endures a living nightmare for thirteen years. Obsessed by the unexpected blow that life has dealt him, he casts aside his beliefs in good and evil and feeds himself on vengeful thoughts against those who betrayed him. With the help of an equally innocent companion (Richard Harris), Dantes comes up with a plan by which he manages to escape from the prison. Then he turns himself into the mysterious and well-to-do Count of Monte Cristo. Following his dastardly plan, he introduces himself into the society of the French nobility and begins systematically to destroy all the men who had manipulated him and condemned him to prison.
