A Really Wrong Way To Obtain Something...
(Lynnette Brashear on I Kings 21:1-29)

A Really Wrong Way to Obtain Something ?

is effectively exampled in I Kings 21:1-29. This passage tells the story of how Ahab saw a vineyard that was close to his palace. He wanted to create a vegetable garden on the land. Now, this land happened to belong to Naboth who refused to sell his property?to a king. Pretty gutsy move, however this property was his inheritance; his God given inheritance. Now I wondered, how did this man say no to a king. The king was offering a trade for the property. He even offered to give him a better vineyard. In addition, Ahab offered to pay Naboth for the land but the offer was refused. He said, ?The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers?.

Now I just had to look into that and found that in Leviticus 25:23-28 it describes a direct command from the Lord that clearly reads, ?that the land must not be sold permanently?. God further explains that the land is His and the people are aliens? His tenants.

Now Ahab was some kind of upset that Naboth wouldn?t sell him that land. He was so upset the passage said that he sulked and refused to eat. I have to wonder about a man that is a king who would go to bed and sulk because someone wouldn?t sell him a piece of land. That pretty much told me that Ahab had to know that the reason Naboth couldn?t let go of that property was a valid one and his hands were tied. And I also had to wonder what kind of a man would sulk over such a trivial manner, but once again that?s a whole different issue.

Well?enter Jezebel, Ahab?s wife. Now it is foolish to underestimate the powers of a woman. A woman can build up or tear down. Many men in the Bible met their demise through of the wiles of a woman. Well, Jezebel has done much before this point and this pretty much fit into the pattern of her acts. She notices that her husband is distraught and asks him innocently enough, ?Why are you so sullen? Why won?t you eat??

When Ahab recounted the whole vineyard story, instead of accepting the answer given by Naboth, she went into a tirade questioning Ahab that he would act this way as king over Israel. In short, she began to instigate. She told Ahab to get up and eat and stated she would get that vineyard for him. At this point, Jezebel began plotting and scheming.

Jezebel plotted to have Naboth killed and in not a pretty way. She had no remorse. After determining Naboth was dead, Jezebel told Ahab to go take possession of the vineyard.

Now people think they can do wrongful acts unseen, however the Lord is always watching and He?s never surprised. So the Lord tells Elijah to go over to the vineyard and tell Ahab that he?s pretty much messed up and that He would bring destruction on not only Ahab but also his descendants. As terrible as Ahab?s fate would be, Jezebel had it more than a wee bit worse.

Now I sat there and wondered, Jezebel arranged the killing and did all the scheming and plotting so what was Ahab?s wrongdoing. Just off the top of my head these things popped into my Spirit.

1. When Ahab found out that the land belonged to Naboth and he couldn?t under the command of the Lord sell that property, Ahab should have dropped it right there and accepted that. So many times we want something that for whatever reason isn?t meant to be ours. We may sulk about not having it and many times figure out ways to get it, but just like that land it?s best to leave it alone and trust God.
2. It was bad enough that Ahab was sulking like a little kid, but when Jezebel came in with talk that she was going to get the land he should have squashed that plot right there. He lived with the woman as his wife. It would be hard to believe that he didn?t know the type of person that she was. He had to know when she said that she would get that land for him that it couldn?t have been good or in an honest way.
3. When the evil deeds were done, Jezebel comes to him and told him that Naboth was dead and go possess his land. Now right there, I can?t believe that he would think, what a coincidence?he?s dead. Instead of possessing that land Ahab STILL should have left it alone?but he didn?t.

Instead, while Ahab was there to take possession of the vineyard, the Lord sent Elijah to let him know?Uh?excuse me, but I see all and know all so what you think you got away with?you really didn?t. Elijah told Ahab what his punishment was to be. Now Ahab was so distressed that he humbled himself before the Lord and because of that act the Lord was compassionate and rescinded his punishment.

If you see something you want, and know that it?s not yours to have?leave it alone because in the scheme of things if you are able to obtain it, it just might be more trouble than it?s actually worth.
