Maria is a young girl from a Brazilian village. She is pretty, ambitious, driven. Her early encounters with love left her with a broken heart, making her believe that "Love is a terrible thing that will make you suffer." She goes to Rio de Janeiro for a well-deserved vacation.
At the beach, she bumps into a man, Roger, who assures her of fame, wealth and a promising career. Stunned that she apparently stood out from all the other beautiful girls frolicking at the beach, she accepts his offers. She then sets off to start a new life for herself in Geneva, putting all her trust in Roger -- the one man she could depend on in this foreign land. Life proves to be very interesting for Maria. Her innocence soon turns to an odyssey of sexual awakenings and self-destruction. She finds herself part of a world filled with drunken men, needy men, pimps, prostitutes, darkness, sex and drugs. She eventually develops a fascination for sex ... leading her further and further away from love. She thinks that sex equals pleasure -- nothing more, nothing less.
Follow Maria as she makes the most out of the circumstances she finds herself in. In her journey to know her true self, she finds out that she has a lot more to learn -- about her principles, her capabilities, her self-worth, her sexuality. Watch her as she attempts to help men who come to her for companionship, friendship, comfort, an embrace, a kiss ... as she struggles to find meaning in her own life. In the end, she finds that what has been missing ... what she has been running away from ... what she has been depriving herself of ... is the only thing that could make her complete.
