Murder On The Orient Express
(Agatha Christie)

Murder on the Orient Express:While England, like the rest of Europe was still recuperating from the fall out of The Great War, and awaited the destruction of the Great Depression, Agatha Christie was busy crafting one of her most famous cases. Written between 1925 and 1933, the story includes the essential recipes of a classic crime novel.Once again the eccentric Private Detective, Hercule Poirot is our protagonist at hand with his obsessive attention to detail, quick wit and finely balanced temperament. The reader is drawn into the story as if they at Poirot?s side. Seeing and hearing as he does, while constantly being fed doses of observation and interpretation ,the reader feels as if they are the ones solving the mystery but are still reliant on Poirot?s better judgement to fill in the pieces. While the book starts off at a moderate pace, the plot thickens and deepens as more characters impose their roles aboard the train. The story goes as thus:Poirot boards an Express train to Istanbul where he observes two passengers that act as if they are strangers but are not. Upon arrival at his designated Tokatlian Hotel, Poirot receives a telegram summoning him back to England. While waiting for the next train to London, Poirot spots two more people he is familiar with.As he boards The Orient Express, Hercule bumps into an old friend, M. Bouc, head of the wagon, who arranges for Poirot to stay in the first class carriage on an unusually busy train. Ratchett, a man previously seen in the Hotel approaches our detective claiming his life is being threatened. Asking if Poirot will take the case, he refuses.During the first night, the train gets stuck in a snow bank. Strange noises emit from Ratchett?s room which is adjacent to Poirot?s. Next morning ratchet is found dead with twelve stab wounds. Various clues are left at the crime seen, but with no footprints left in the snow outside the open window, the killer is still on board.Because a Murder has been committed, Poirot is forced to solve the case. While searching the dead man?s compartment, Poirot discovers a piece of paper with the name ?Armstrong? on it. This helps our determined sleuth to decipher Ratchett?s killer.Interviews are conducted with everybody that Poirot feels is connected with the case. The relative luggage is checked also, revealing some interesting facts that help resolve the mystery. After the questioning is completed, Poirot sits in a trance like state. The suspects are rounded up and converge in the dining car. Here. Poirot reveals two possible solutions; one of which is correct. The ideas for this particular story are taken from two incidents that occurred in real life in the 1929 and 1932. Firstly, the orient express was snowbound for six days while crossing the Turkish border. Secondly, Charles and Anne Marrow Lindbergh paid a ransom of $50,000 for the release of their kidnapped baby, but the baby was murdered anyway. This is a compelling novel, one that readers will struggle to put down!
