Awakening The Buddha Within
(Lama Surya Das)
A great path to peace! ?Awaking the Buddha Within? is a great examination of Buddhism for the new initiate. While the book professes to be easy steps to understanding the core tenants of Buddhism, it is actually much more. Lama Surya Das begins looking at his own ascent into the philosophical teachings of The Buddha and ends with a look forward into the role of Buddhism in the western world. Along the way, however, he does spend many well written pages examining the basic workings of Buddhism.According to Lama Surya Das, there are eight basic steps to being a Buddhist; Right View, Right Intentions, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration. They are not lessons in a ?Right turn on red? sort of way. They are ways of life. If the lessons of each of these steps can be followed, peace can be achieved. Some of the truths of Buddhism can be startling and Lama is a good person to be bringing them into The West. For example, Buddhism is not really a religion in the classic sense. It?s a way of life. Lama, for example, is Jewish. We also learn that it is a self-critical philosophy. The Buddha himself taught his followers not to follow him simply because he taught but only because what he taught was right and rang true. The writing is easy but can be difficult only because so many of the topics are new. The book is interspersed with poems and quote by leaders and thinkers both eastern and western, old and new. While reading this book will not make you instantly enlightened, it will teach you the true nature of Buddhism and prepare you for the journey to enlightenment should you choose to start down the path.
