ENNIS, GARTH withLLOYD, DAVID - NIGHTINGALE in WAR STRIES Volume One 2004 DC Comics Tragic war drama in graphic novella format. The fictional story tells the sorry tale of the crew of the HMS Nightingale during World War Two, and how they felt personally responsible for a tragedy outside of their own control. Sailing as part of an Atlantic and arctic Convoy, the Nightingale receives ominous orders. The British Admiralty sends a message to them indicating that the dreaded German destroyer, The Tirpitz, is heading towards them. The Nightingale is now under orders to hunt Te Tirpitz while the merchant ships that she should be protecting, have to split up and sail on unprotected. As The Nightingale does her duty, they hear reports of ship after ship being picked off by the wolf Pack U-Boats of the Arctic, leaving hundreds of men to die in the freezing seas. The crew of the Nightingale become pariahs, on a ship regarded as a jinx. It turns out that the Tirpitz had not sailed at all. The Nightingale crew are unfairly blamed for the events that followed. Sent later on Convoy in the Mediterranean, the ship redeems herself by going down in bate to protect a small convoy. Every man on board dies, somehow relieved that their sacrifice redeems their reputation in the history books. A chilling, haunting tale about the stigma that men feel in defeat, and the wasted, often real sense that only heroic death can save such men. The story is told in the first person by a member of the crew as he himself dies, relieved that he was not doomed, like Ishmael in Herman Melville?s Moby Dick to be the last survivor, carrying the pain and shame around on his shoulders forever.
