ABSTRACT ? PETRUCHA, STEFAN, ROSUM, JOHN & ADLARD, CHARLES ? THE X-FILES. DEAD TO THE WORLD 1996 Titan Books. Graphic novel, or at least that is what it looks like at first glance, but it is actually three separate adventures based closely on the X-Files TV series about paranormal investigators linked to the FBI. The title story, DEAD TO THE WORLD, pitches Muldar and Scully against the well-known St. Germain, a medieval alchemist (a real historic figure) who has discovered the secret to immortality. The secret involves stealing glands from very old people, so when a 106 year old woman dies mysteriously, Germain is hunted by the Feds. When Muldar catches up with him, Germain fakes his own suicide, but he is a master conjurer who has faked death many times. Now, in a state of ageing, and riddled with flesh eating parasites, he kidnaps Scully to help him survive again, but he is quickly foiled once more. The second story BIG FOOT; WARM HEART features the Sasquatch, who is actually a rather large werewolf like entity in this story. He is a pawn in a game in which two big game hunters use robots to hunt dangerous creatures, and they even try to hunt down Scully and Muldar, but the Sasquatch helps them, and even allows the main villain, his own brother, to live. In the final story, SCAPE GOATS, a Puerto Rican village is visited by UFO?s and goat-sucking Cuchucabras. A young goatherd, desperate to earn money for a scholarship, may have faked some of the murders (but not all of them), which these entities are responsible for. The story ends inconclusively, as Muldar and Scully find no evidence for convictions either way. The stories maintain the spirit of the series, with some intelligent lines and references, quirky humour and genuine mystery, but the stories are too short to have the sense of depth that the show carried so well in its early seasons.
