(Emily Bronte)

'Wuthering Heights', is a novel of passions running riot; a love so destructive that it ultimately consumes two generations. The story is narrated by Nelly Dean, the housekeeper, to Mr. Lockwood, the tenant at the Thruscross Grange. While Nelly provides the subjective insider's account, Lockwood is the objective spectator. Heathcliff is an orphan boy rescued from the streets of Liverpool. The kindly Mr. Earnshaw who took him home, was not ready for the despicable treatment Hindley, his son meted out to the poor fatherless child. So when the old gentleman died & Hindley brought home a wife, Heathcliff is doomed to a life of perpetual misery. This ignited in him a fire of naked hatred which later becomes a towering inferno. However, every cloud has a silver lining, Catherine Earnshaw - wayward, wild, headstrong, and very beautiful - this rose of the Earnshaw clan made the world go around for Heathcliff. She was his only comfort & joy, his reason for survival in those bleak surroundings. Even as children the two are mysteriously drawn towards each other, & they become inseperable after growing up.So when inspite of all her love the whimsical Catherine marries Edgar Linton, the good looking & soft spoken son of the neighbourhood family at Thrushcross Grange, just because he is rich, she dooms not only herself & the two families involved, but also the next generation. Heathcliff loses even the semblence of sanity & becomes all fury. He disappeares for three years & returns the gentleman Cathy wished him to be. But now revenge is his sole motive. He seduces Isabella, Edgar's sister, marries her & then tortures her to such an extreme that she runs away, only to die a lonely woman. Hindley becomes a drunken sod & dies in penury. None of the Linton & Earnshaw families, not even Hareton, & Catherine who constitute the second generation escape the brunt of his demonic fury. Even his own son, the lily livered Linton is not spared. It is only when he finds peace with himself & is united with his beloved for eternity, that the storms subside & order is restored. Love finally triumphs over hate.Emily Bronte was the most talented of all the three Bronte sisters. In all of her 30 years (1818-1848) she has written a single volume of poems under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. However, her fame rests on this sole novel written during her lifetime 'Wuthering Heights'.
