with something new,
just to return anything i stole

the slight is that you hate
what you retrieve. to collapse
before retreat, you’re pulling
punches in your dreams.
you’re the cloudless sky,
i’m the endless night,
and i’ll go to bed now,
but i’ll stay up thinking
“could have been better,
coulda/shoulda stayed up longer.”
and then just comes the day
when you don’t even try
to find me, when you’re
back in town and you don’t even
like what you say you like.
