This is an innovative book! Simply innovative! A book that tackles the more practical aspects of teaching in a direct and objective way. The book revolves around 10 basic abilities you need to have to teach in a real classroom. That's right! I say this because most books of this kind are based on a virtual classroom (all resources available, support from the administration, parents and community) with ideal students (motivated, obedient, disciplined, that love their teacher and love to learn). Not Perrenoud! The author goes right to the point. When he tackles (in chapter 9) the ethical dilemmas of the profession, he will not mention the "sacred mission" of teachers and their commitment to the progress of humanity and the children's future like others do. No! Perrenoud deals with real questions. He will talk about the importance of negotiation, alerting the teacher that he can not ignore the fact that he is no longer the absolute authority and that if insisting in this course of action there can be "reprisals" such as pierced tires and physical violence. He alerts to the importance of the teacher having a more personal attitude to teaching, arguing that it is necessary to put emotion and personality in the act of teaching because only in this way he can make the students understand the social value of teaching. The author, starting in chapter 1, will emphasize this point meaning that the knowledge of what is to be taught is the least of the abilities required to teach in the context of contemporary society, alerting that the real ability is in creating the conditions that make the students want to continue learning.
