The Unabridged Journals Of Sylvia Plath
(Karin V. Kukil (edited by))
This is the first American publication of the actual diaries of the ill-fated poet,Sylvia Plath.Poet, teacher, and novelist, she wrote the autobiographical The Bell Jar , concerning a character who was grappling with most of what Plath herself was suffering from. She committed suicide in 1963. One can clearly see the darkening moods lift and descend in these entries. It seems clear in hindsight she suffered from severe clinical depression, and suffered from obssesive thoughts of failure and worthlessness. This seems so at odds with the brilliance of this woman's art-she recieved a Pulitzter in 1983 for a collection of her poetry.Unfortunately, she was not alive to enjoy this valiation.Frighteningly intelligent, she was also a teacher at Smith College.I have always found it somewhat odd that her poet-husband did not further seek help for this troubled young artist. Beware and be warned-some these entires are so emotional raw they mught be upsetting to some. The edge of desperation that colored her work is constant in this glimpse of her inner torment.Plath shows certain tendencies of mania also, growing giddy with the beauty of a child picking flowers, only to plunge downward again at some innocuos darkness.Though I am not sure if darkness is ever innocuous. After all-it is all in the vision of the one peering through the lense,is it not?I have loved Sylvia Plath since I was ten years old.I carried a battered copy of her work to school to prove my intentions to become a poet.I feel she has been misrepresented in the film venue,as well as others. Some of the verse entered in her daily struggle with Life is stunning in it's fear and resignation that this is the price she must pay for the art she creates and suffers for. This is a must read for all Plath fans, poetry lovers, and those who seek a detailed look into the complexities of such a tragic, rare mind.
