Twelfth Night
(William Shakespeare)
The Duke of Illyria, Orsino, is madly in love with the rich heiress Olivia, who is in mourning after the death of her brother. Olivia continues to deny Orsino his suit and remains caught in a powerful melancholy after the death of her brother. Meanwhile, Viola has been shipwrecked upon the shores of Illyria. She fears that she lost her twin brother after the ship sank, and is left alone on strange shores. Wary of the land that she has entered, she decides it is best to dress as a boy and thus safeguard herself from harm. In her new clothes she calls herslef Cesario and attaches herself to Orsino's household to act as one of his servants. Olivia lives in a mansion with her cousin Sir Toby, who is a drunken lout and his foolish friend, Sir Andrew Aguecheek who is seeking the hand of Olivia in marriage. Malvolio, Olivia's steward, is constantly at odds with Sir Toby and his friends, and tries to keep them within the bounds of decorum. Aguecheek with the help of Maria, Olivia's maid, and Aguecheek all find a way to get back at the puritanical Malvolio. They make him think that Olivia is in love with him and after his strange behavior, Olivia sends him to an insane asylum. Viola is sent to Olivia to plead her master's cause, but secretly Viola has fallen in love with her master and would prefer to do anything but plead for Olivia. After Olivia refuses Orsino so disdainfully, Viola criticizes her for her unkindness. Viola's strong words and hostile manner has overcome Olivia and she falls in love with the boy, Cesario. After Viola leaves, Olivia has a ring sent to her, pretending it was sent back to her master. An intelligent girl, Viola realizes that Olivia now is in love with her and finds her disguise a curse. Still she must do what she can for her master. To add to the confusion, Viola's twin brother Sebastian, who looks much like Cesario, arrives in Illyria. He gets mistaken for Cesario, fights a duel and ends up marrying Olivia. When Orsino finds that Olivia has married who she thinks is Cesario, he confronts Viola, she is at a loss to know what has happened. Soon, however, all is made right and the sister and brother are reunited. Orsino also realizes that his man is a maid and decides to marry Viola after all.
