The Dorling Kindersley Bike Repair Manual is an excellent cycle repair book for those new to bicycle maintenance; who are not natural mechanics or who want nothing more than a quick reference guide to bicycle repair. Many manuals claim to be easy to follow. However, the truth is that they too often betray the fact that the author is a highly experienced mechanic who is unable to empathise with those of us who are not mechanically-minded and, perhaps, are not particularly interested in the mechanics of cycling. Also, they often make the mistake common to manuals inasmuch as they miss out that small but critical step; the author assuming a level of knowledge that is not there on the part of the reader.
Anyone who rides a bike regularly wants to be able to avoid the cost and inconvenience of having their bike serviced at a shop. This book is ideal for cyclists who wish to do this without becoming expert technicians. No prior knowledge is assumed and the simplest of tasks (for example, cleaning a bike or mending a puncture) are explained and the more complicated, but necessary task are simply explained. Besides repairs and maintenance, the manual gives short, clear explanations of the various parts of a bike and how they work.
Although quite a small book, most tasks needed to be done are covered and the scope of the book is broad enough to cover the most common types of bicycles and the different types of components one is likely to encounter. Finally, but importantly, the benefit of it being published by Dorling Kindersley is that, as is usual with this publisher, the use of illustrations to support the text is excellent.
