."Mysteries" is the second novel of Knut Hamsun from 1982.In this book the central character is a typivcal hamsunian character, a solitary young man, eccentric and of aristocratic demeanour called Nagel. No sooner has he reached a small Norwegian city than he falls in love with the pastor's daughter Dagny Kielland. But beyond the simple and furious love story it is first and foremost about the man and his interior life. With this novel Hamsun goes deep into the criticism of the Norwegian and European naturalism. Nagel is an extreme case, a hypersensitive that appears to have lost his oneness; he is no longer able to decide by himself. Nagel is the proof that man in general is not an integral being but a fighting field for various driving forces, contradiction that can lead him to unreasonableness. The ambiguity and the frightening setting of the plot show that the personality and the behaviour of Nagel are about to break apart .The tone of the narrative, a bit lyrical, a bit dramatic according to the mood of the principal character drive the reader to ask whether Nagel is a mad or a clown or a desperate failed genius. The thought of committing suicide ever present at the beginning of the novel comes to its realisation at the end. At the end the bitterness, the incisive humour and the loathing that underpinned the plot of the novel does not prevent from seeing that Nagel is a man that loves of a love of love and that is doomed to love without return
