Rotary Variable Compression-ratio Engine

Rotary Variable Compression Ratio Engine

A Mechanical Engineering student of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India has developed an engine which can run on wide variety of fuels. Conventional engines are designed to work on only one type of fuel depending on the compression ratio of the engine and there is no way to change the compression ratio once the engine is designed. On the contrary, the ROTARY VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATIO ENGINE developed by Mr. Ajee Kamath has the feature of varying the degree of compression. This makes it possible for the engine to use variety of fuels like LPG, Petrol, Diesel or Biogas. This engine performs the functions of a compressor, motor, pump and an Internal Combustion Engine.
38-year old Kamath now has the India Patent for this apparatus. Also, The European Patent Office accepted his claims on the invention for its novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability. Mr. Kamath spent Rupees 2.5 million to build this prototype. The inventor says he got a positive feedback from Government of India?s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and Tata Motors to make a working model of the engine.
