The land of the Dracula

Do you want to experience medieval Europe where the women in their traditional dresses make wine in their cottages and men take their sheep and cows to the hills for grazing? Do you want to visit the biggest delta of Europe where the variety in flora and fauna has no end? If that?s not enough would you want to visit the Dracula castle set in the ravines of the pristine Carpathian range of mountains? If your answer is yes then the beautiful land of Romania awaits you. Recently I went to Romania for a traineeship in an NGO in a city called Galati which is based on the banks of the longest river of Europe called the Danube River. In my stay of 2 months in Romania I traveled about 6 cities apart from Galati. Geographically Romania can be classified into three main geographical features namely the Carpathian mountain range, the black sea cost and the Danube delta. Fortunately I got the opportunity of experiencing all these areas. My first trip was to the black sea coast. I went to a city called Costinesti. It boasts of having one of the wildest beaches of Romania. The black sea coast of Romania is flooded with tourists in the summer season. Young and old people alike come here not only to enjoy the cool water of the black sea and the warm sun but also for medical therapies, as the water of black sea is said to contain meditative properties good for curing skin diseases. Undoubtedly today black sea salts are used in a number of cosmetic products. My second trip was to the Carpathian range of mountains. The Carpathian Mountains run through a number of countries in Europe including Switzerland, Serbia, Romania, Germany etc. they are also referred to as one of the most beautiful mountain ranges of the world. Here I visited three cities namely Brashov, Cluj and Tirgumuresh. My journey by train through the mountains was indeed delightful. The nature presented itself in its most pristine form. The mountains seem to have a virgin beauty. I made my first stop in Brashov. In the basin of the mountains in Brashov lies the Dracula castle. The seventh most popular myth of the world still reverberates in these mountains even after 400 years of the death of Vlad ? the vampire vis-à-vis Dracula .Vlad the emperor of Transylvania is know to be the only king to have defeated the Ottoman Empire. He was known for his cruelty, as he used to slaughter his enemies and then drink their blood. However the second part of the above statement was only a fluke popularized by his enemies to make him unpopular among his own people and thus defeat him. Since then he has been famous in horror stories and even movies for his notorious acts. But undoubtedly the castle made by him adds to the splendor of the mountains. This spooky castle remains a major tourist attraction throughout the year and is certainly worth a visit. After leaving Brashov I visited Tirgumuresh and Cluj. I was lucky to be in midst of a medieval festival happening there at the time of my visit. It was a culmination of modern and traditional art, music etc. during day time the streets and a fortress was filled with traditional things made by people in the countryside. These included pottery items, wooden utensils beautifully painted, Easter eggs, colorful stones and jewelry items, paintings etc. Not to forget there traditional wines. Romania produces the best quality wine in the world after France. People enjoyed traditional drama and theatre. At night concerts were held by famous Romanian as well as other international artists. And youngsters could be seen sprawling the hilly roads dancing on there favorite music. My next trip was to the Danube delta. Here I was staying in a camp. It was the most exciting trip of all. Here I not only enjoyed the wide range of flora and fauna but also participated in a number of activities like fishing, boating, river rafting etc. there are no roads in the delta. The only way of commuting there was through ferries and boats.Last but not the least I went to the capital city of Romania ? Bucharest. The most interesting part about Bucharest is that here one can find all forms of European architecture ranging from Greek architecture to Italian, Turkish, British, French and many more. The biggest attraction of the city is the parliament house, which is the second biggest building of the world after the pentagon. Here in this building one can find huge chandeliers, magnificent rooms, halls and passageways which in itself are a wonder. The above paragraphs however are insufficient to describe Romania. Romania without its people is like the sky without the moon. The Romanian people are the biggest strength of Romania. Very down to earth and benevolent in there behavior Romanians treat there guests with reverence. Therefore if you want to enjoy the crazy night life and parties or the serene beauty and the tranquility of the nature, Romania is the place to be.
